Department of Botany
The Department of Botany, Nabadwip Vidyasagar College, was established in 1976. It started with offering only a general course, but introduced an honours course in 2001. The honours course followed a 2+1 pattern until 2008-09, and then switched to a 1+1+1 pattern from 2009-10. In 2018-19, the department adopted the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) curriculum recommended by UGC, along with a semester pattern. The CBCS curriculum aims to foster an all-round development of the students by combining general and specialised education, and introducing the concepts of breadth and depth in learning. From the academic session 2023-24 the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) is going to be introduced.
Currently, there are three full-time faculty members, two state-aided college teachers and one casual non-teaching staff member.
The department provides laboratory facilities to meet all the requirements of the curriculum. Besides the Central Library facilities of the college, the department has its own library and a reading room. To keep up with the advancement of technology in teaching-learning methods, the department also has a smart classroom with ICT and audio-visual facilities.
Apart from the regular academic activities, the Department gets involved in many other curricular and extracurricular activities like organising student seminars, publication of wall magazine and digital magazine, publication of the newsletter of the department (yearly), writing endeavour of the students once in a year (Floresce), educational excursions at different phytogeographical regions along with visit to different places like(tissue culture laboratory, sacred grove, wild life sanctuary, national park, Howrah Botanical garden and AGCB herbarium), parent-teacher meeting, celebration of Teachers’ day, induction programme for the newly admitted students, fresher’s welcome and farewell programme.
The department always extends all kinds of advice and help to the ex-students for their career advancement. There is an alumni association in the department.
Overall The Department offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary curriculum that covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of Botany.
